The creation of Jharkhand
On 15 November 2000 the Bihar Reorganisation Act, 2000 created Jharkhand from Bihar’s southern districts, and Koderma passed to the new state. The Lok Sabha accordingly records her membership from 2000 to 2005 as being of the “Bihar/Jharkhand Legislative Assembly”.

Press reports record that she left the Rashtriya Janata Dal — which she had led in Jharkhand as state president — and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in New Delhi on 25 March 2019. In the general election that followed she was elected to the 17th Lok Sabha from Koderma, polling 7,53,016 votes, 62.26% of the votes cast, a margin of 4,55,600 over the runner-up (Election Commission of India).
In the House she sat on the Standing Committee on Industry and the Committee on Empowerment of Women, and raised Koderma’s concerns — mica, railways, highways, irrigation and the Tilaiya dam — in Zero Hour and under Rule 377.

On 7 July 2021 she joined the Union Council of Ministers as Minister of State in the Ministry of Education. The Ministry of Women and Child Development’s profile records that in this period she headed an expert committee on the revision of the Right to Education framework in view of the National Education Policy 2020. In the 2024 general election she was re-elected from Koderma with 7,91,657 votes (57.79%), a margin of 3,77,014.
